Residential Apartment Building Rendering

St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church is excited to present our proposal for a new modern apartment building to the Murphy-Michigan community.

This modern residential building has been designed to provide 45 one bedroom units for the neighbourhood that will integrate seamlessly with the operations of our church and daycare, onsite. This apartment provides its tenants with beautiful daylit spaces in a contemporary structure that will implement green and sustainable technologies within. The apartment will provide housing to seniors and presents an opportunity for those aging in this neighbourhood to continue to do so in a suitable environment.

The building will be located on the north side of our property with direct access to murphy road, and a private parking area at the back of the building. Walkability is enhanced as commercial amenities are conveniently located across the street as well as an adjacent bus stop for public transportation.

We trust the community will be as proud of this building as we are. We want our building to provide a positive impact not only to our future tenants but the community that surrounds us as well.

St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church has been a proud member of the Michigan/Murphy neighbourhood for many years. Since moving to this site in 2005, we have embraced being in this neighbourhood and have enjoyed hosting events such as Greek Fest and Canada Day celebrations. As our membership evolves, so does our site. This fall we will welcome Angels daycare in our former community hall. This opportunity to work with a community partner opened our eyes to what other possibilities are there for us to continue making a positive impact. There is a great need in Sarnia to provide housing, especially housing where people can afford to live. Covid-19 has highlighted the importance of living in a safe, secure environment and we would like to be be part of the solution. The Church has engaged personnel from Vision ’74 Inc, a non-profit charity, who in 2019 completed their apartment at 241 Wellington St, Sarnia (cover photo) and has provided inspiration for us to pursue a similar project on our site. Over the course of the next few months, consultants will be engaged to understand the development opportunities of our site and to rezone the property allowing apartment use. Notice will be sent out to our neighbours for community consultation where we welcome questions and input. We aim to provide a building we are all proud to live beside that meets a need in the community. Please stay tuned as this development progresses.
